Many of the traditional ways in which we assist our co-interpreters on assignments centres on the source language; i.e. we feed a missed name, we feed a finger spelled word.

The assistance we give to our colleagues with the target language has also, traditionally, been focussed on filling in the missing detail.

The effect this has had overall has been to give the impression that detail is the most important thing in an interpretation and that an interpretation which makes use of metaphor, summation or paraphrasing is therefore seen to be lacking.

Not so!

This workshop introduces new ways in which highly experienced interpreters have been offering support with both the source language message and meaning, and the target language - feeding the product.

In this one day workshop we discuss John Walker’s list of ways in which co-interpreting can be effective, contrast it with Nigel Cleaver’s co-worker types and indulge in a new framework within which we operate as a professional, effective team.

Through pairs sessions we experience new techniques to use when supporting one another which not only enhance the co-working, but move us towards co-interpreting.
