Feedback from Advanced Mental Health Interpreting workshop

I particularly appreciated the long day.  So often training runs 10 till 4 and is rushed because there just isn't the time to explore at a good pace.  This weekend I haven't felt rushed.. There seemed plenty of time to explore the case presentations as well as the question /answer /comment sessions.

It was more than expected... Always a good thing.

Most useful: It was the practical application of the theory... And the demonstration of this that I most appreciated.  I liked having a chance to be part of both Robyn and David's groups... and to experience different ways of using demand and control to unpick our work. If felt good to use real cases and real interpreters rather than a role play type set up. It left me with the wish to use it both in the peer group of which I am apart and the one I facilitate.

I have definitely put into practice some of the strategies presented, particularly the DC-S - got the text book and have introduced the concept to my colleagues. It has proved a really constructive tool and is quite enlightening. It has effected my decision making, exercising more controls on whether to accept a booking and if so, obtaining detailed prep.

A lot of the content was enormously reassuring!  As Interpreters we often work alone and don't get many opportunities to discuss assignments with our colleagues.

I am more pro-active in asking about the purpose of the appointment, what does the health professional aim to achieve, what approach will they be using etc.

I would recommend the course to colleagues, it stands alone in addressing a deeper analysis of interpreting within the mental health domain.
